Geneva opens discussion on recreational burning
Geneva officials surveyed residents, other municipalities and fire departments to get an idea of how the city might allow for recreational burning.
Except for the Geneva High School homecoming bonfire, the city ordinance allows outdoor burning for cooking and food preparation.
In her presentation to the committee of the whole Monday, City Administrator Mary McKittrick presented information that the city averages 12 nuisance burning calls a year. Seventeen communities surveyed have ordinances allowing burning in manufactured fire pits or back yard fire places.
Stephen Persinger, a city resident and former park district director, advocated for the city to continue to allow back yard fires.
“I do follow the ordinance, but I worry more about regulation to stop people from using their own property,” Persinger said. “I don’t want to lose my fire.”
But Geneva Township Supervisor Patrick Jaeger, both in his official capacity and personally, said he was against it.
“If it’s a nice, cool, comfortable evening, and we have the windows open, the house is full of smoke,” Jaeger said. “Constantly, constantly all weekend, all week. It’s not the next door neighbors, but neighbors three, four, five blocks away.”
