Downtown Batavia – Arts Abound
The character of Batavia is found in its downtown, the events that take place, and people you’ll meet. Whether you are the artsy type, love history, are looking for a recreational adventure, or just a space to decompress, downtown Batavia has an experience waiting for you. (From the July/August issue.)
This energy and enthusiasm is at work once again as Batavia volunteers are putting the finishing touches on the band shell addition to the Peg Bond Center at the Batavia Riverwalk and an enthusiastic group of artists opened Water Street Studios, home to 26 artists’ studios, an art gallery and classrooms (waterstreetstudios.org) last September.
Home to the Arts
Downtown Batavia, nestled on the banks of the Fox River just 38 miles west of Chicago, is home to the fine arts, creative professional services, and the new Water Street Studios. Pair up one of downtown’s 26 eateries with the Albright Theatre (found in the attic of City Hall) and your evening is planned - including free parking! Musical arts businesses are a niche downtown with live local music featured in many restaurants on the weekends or dancing at the Batavia Academy of Dance.
The entire downtown celebrates the arts during its signature festival, Art in Your Eye (artinyoureye.com) the second weekend in August. Are you the outdoor type? Try experiencing the arts by bicycle! Bring along your bicycle or rent one at Prairie Path Cycles and use the “Arts via downtown Batavia” map to visit all our public art and arts-related businesses.
Perhaps you are looking to start up an arts-related business? Batavia MainStreet is eager to work with emerging and established artists and businesses that utilize and support the arts (downtownbatavia.com).
Public Art Anchors Downtown
The completion of the Donovan Bridge and installation of Batavia’s first bridge sculpture by local artist Kai Schulte is a dynamic centerpiece for downtown’s redevelopment.
